Origin
Fascia of the upper thorax, including the clavicle, acromial region, pectoralis major, and deltoid muscles
Insertion
Mandible, skin of the cheek, commissure of the mouth, orbicularis oris muscle, and posterior border of the depressor anguli oris muscle.
The platysma has a small bony insertion, located on the anterior third of the mandible.
Blood Supply
Branches of the subclavian artery (suprascapular artery) and external carotid artery.
The platysma, innervated by the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII), is a thin, broad, sheet-like voluntary muscle. It is superficial and overlaps the sternocleidomastoid.
It originates from the skin and fascia covering the upper parts of the pectoralis major and deltoid. The platysma fibers cross the clavicle and proceed obliquely upward and medially along the side of the neck.
The platysma inserts into several points, including the mandible, the skin of the lower face, the lower lip, and the corners of the mouth.
Immediately deep to the platysma are the sternocleidomastoid and digastric muscles. Medially, the first layer of muscles covers the larynx and thyroid.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE
Due to its direct attachment to the skin of the lower face, the platysma plays a minor role in producing facial expressions. It helps create an expression of sadness by pulling the corners of the mouth inferiorly and contributes to the emotions of surprise, horror, or disgust.
The platysma also assists in depressing the mandible (e.g., opening the mouth wide) and tenses the skin of the neck, aiding in neck movement and stabilization during various activities.
