The rotator cuff muscles are a common name for the group of four distinct muscles that originate from the scapula and attach to the humeral head. Collectively, the rotator cuff muscles act to stabilize the humeral head within the glenoid fossa of the scapula, enabling a greater range of motion at the glenohumeral joint while minimizing biomechanical impingement during elevation. This stability is essential for avoiding mechanical obstructions and allowing efficient shoulder movement.
One way to remember the muscles’ names is to simply call them the SITS muscles, which is an acronym for the first letter of their names:
Dynamic Stabilization
Facilitation of Arm Movements
Internal and External Rotation
Coordination with the Deltoid Muscle
Neuromuscular Control
Maintaining balanced strength and flexibility in each of the four rotator cuff muscles is essential for the proper function of the entire shoulder girdle. This balance not only contributes to optimal shoulder mechanics but also plays a crucial role in the prevention of shoulder injuries. By stabilizing the shoulder joint and ensuring proper mechanics during movement, the rotator cuff muscles help reduce the risk of injuries, such as rotator cuff tears and shoulder impingement syndrome.
A well-functioning rotator cuff is particularly vital for overall shoulder health in athletes and individuals who engage in repetitive overhead activities. Ensuring that these muscles are strong and flexible helps maintain shoulder stability, allowing for a full range of motion and minimizing the chances of injury.

Mentor Exercise Review
A Mentor Review is a live guided session where you can present exercises, ask questions, and receive individual feedback on your execution, cueing, and reasoning.
Please prepare (at least) one exercise you would like feedback on. Active participation is encouraged to gain the full benefit of the session.
Sessions require a minimum of two participants. If fewer than two students are registered 48 hours in advance, the session will be cancelled.
Mentor Reviews are scheduled based on participant availability. You will receive a confirmation email once your session is finalized.
