The rhomboids are two bilateral, superficial muscles – rhomboid major and rhomboid minor – located in the upper back, deep to the trapezius. These functionally similar muscles lie deep into the trapezius where the rhomboid major is thin and flat and twice as wide as the thicker rhomboid minor which lies superior to it.
The rhomboids play a crucial role in retracting, elevating, and stabilizing the scapula, contributing significantly to upper limb movement and shoulder girdle stability.
Scapular Retraction: The rhomboids pull the scapula toward the spine, playing an important role in maintaining proper posture and alignment.
Scapular Elevation: They assist in elevating the scapula, which is fundamental during overhead movements.
Inferior Rotation of the Glenoid Cavity: This action allows for proper shoulder mechanics when the arm is raised.
Stabilization of the Scapula: The rhomboids anchor the scapula in a neutral position, preventing winging alongside the serratus anterior and trapezius.
Support for Dynamic Movements: They are vital in actions such as pulling and significantly contribute to throwing and overhead arm movements.
Posture Maintenance: By opposing excessive scapular protraction, the rhomboids help maintain correct posture when sitting, standing, and walking.
Cooperation with Other Muscles: The rhomboids work synergistically with other muscles to facilitate smooth upper limb movements.

A Mentor Review is a live guided session where you can present exercises, ask questions, and receive individual feedback on your execution, cueing, and reasoning.
Please prepare (at least) one exercise you would like feedback on. Active participation is encouraged to gain the full benefit of the session.
Sessions require a minimum of two participants. If fewer than two students are registered 48 hours in advance, the session will be cancelled.
