Use them to reinforce your knowledge and identify areas that may need more attention.

  • The iliopsoas is a key muscle group linking the upper and lower body, including the psoas major, psoas minor and iliacus.
  • It is about 41 cm in length and functions as a single unit or separately.
  • Psoas Major: T12 to L3 vertebrae and their intervertebral discs.
  • Psoas Minor: T12 to L1 vertebrae.
  • Iliacus: Iliac fossa and sacrum.
  • Psoas Major & Iliacus: Join and insert at the lesser trochanter of the femur.
  • Psoas Minor: Inserts at the iliopectineal eminence and iliac fascia.
  • Hip Flexion: Main muscle for lifting the upper leg or pulling the body toward the leg.
  • Lumbar Spine Stabilization: Aids in correct posture during standing, sitting, and walking.
  • Hip Abduction & External Rotation: Important for dynamic movements like high kicks and ballet.
  • Spinal Flexion: In exercises like sit-ups, helps pull the lumbar spine into flexion.
  • Psoas Paradox refers to the dual role of the iliopsoas in lumbar spine extension (when upright) and flexion (during exercises like sit-ups).
  • The muscle can produce opposite effects on the spine depending on posture.
  • Excessive Tightness: Leads to anterior pelvic tilt and lumbar hyperlordosis (swayback).
  • Weakness: Can contribute to flat back posture and poor lumbar curvature.
  • The psoas major affects the lumbar lordotic curve, helping stabilize the lumbar spine.
  • Tightness or weakness in the psoas major can cause spinal deviations like scoliosis.
  • Pelvic Stabilization: Helps stabilize the pelvis during running and hip flexion.

Contributes to trunk flexion and can stretch the iliac fascia to help with movement efficiency.
