Origin and Insertion
Innervation
Posterior rami of spinal nerves.
Blood Supply
Lateral sacral artery.
| Muscle | Origin | Insertion |
|---|---|---|
| Longissimus capitis | C4–T4 transverse process | Posterior edge of the mastoid process |
| Longissimus cervicis | T1–T4 transverse process | C2–C6 transverse process |
| Longissimus thoracic | Transverse process of the lumbar vertebra and blends with the iliocostalis in the lumbar region | Transverse process of all thoracic vertebrae |
The longissimus muscle, the central and largest component of the erector spinae group, contributes significantly to spinal movement and head rotation. Its long fibers enable a smooth transition between the thoracic and cervical regions, supporting both mobility and stability.
Bilateral Contraction: Extends the vertebral column.
Unilateral Contraction: Ipsilateral flexion of the vertebral column.
Longissimus capitis Role: Extends and laterally rotates the head.
Synergistic Role: Works alongside the iliocostalis and spinalis for spinal alignment and load distribution.
Antagonist: Rectus abdominis muscle.

A Mentor Review is a live guided session where you can present exercises, ask questions, and receive individual feedback on your execution, cueing, and reasoning.
Please prepare (at least) one exercise you would like feedback on. Active participation is encouraged to gain the full benefit of the session.
Sessions require a minimum of two participants. If fewer than two students are registered 48 hours in advance, the session will be cancelled.
Mentor Reviews are scheduled based on participant availability. You will receive a confirmation email once your session is finalized.
