Origin
The serratus posterior inferior originates from the spinous processes of the T11 to L2 vertebrae and the supraspinous ligament.
Insertion
The muscle inserts on the inferior borders of the 9th to 12th ribs, near their angles.
Innervation
The serratus posterior inferior is innervated by the lower intercostal nerves, which arise from the T9-T12 spinal segments. These nerves provide motor innervation to the muscles of the thoracic and abdominal walls.
Blood Supply
The blood supply to the serratus posterior inferior comes from the posterior intercostal arteries, branches of the thoracic aorta.
The serratus posterior inferior is a muscle located in the lower back, deep to the latissimus dorsi. Positioned between the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, it is part of the intermediate layer of extrinsic back muscles. This muscle plays a key role in respiration by depressing the lower ribs during exhalation, facilitating forced expiration. It also contributes to stabilizing the lower thoracic and upper lumbar spine, supporting posture and spinal alignment. Dysfunction of the serratus posterior inferior can affect both respiratory efficiency and spinal stability, particularly in the lower back.
Clinical Significance
Respiratory Function
The serratus posterior inferior depresses the lower ribs (ribs 9-12) during exhalation, reducing the volume of the thoracic cavity and aiding in forced expiration.
Stabilization of the Thoracic and Lumbar Spine
The muscle helps stabilize the lower thoracic and upper lumbar regions of the spine, contributing to overall spinal stability and posture, especially during movements like bending and twisting.
