Origin and Insertion
Innervation
Posterior rami of spinal nerves.
Blood Supply
Intercostal and lumbar arteries.
| Muscle | Origin | Insertion |
|---|---|---|
| Iliocostalis cervicis | Angle of ribs 3 – 6 | Transverse process of C4–C6 |
| Iliocostalis thoracis | Angle of the lower six ribs | Angles of the upper six ribs and transverse process of C7 |
| Iliocostalis lumborum | Iliac crest | L1–L4 lumbar transverse processes, angle of 4–12 ribs and thoracolumbar fascia |
The iliocostalis muscle, the most lateral of the erector spinae group, provides crucial lateral stability to the spine. Its attachment to the ribs allows for significant control over spinal and thoracic movements, ensuring flexibility and endurance in dynamic activities.
General Biomechanical and Functional Insights
Bilateral Contraction: Extends the vertebral column.
Unilateral Contraction: Produces ipsilateral lateral flexion of the spine.
Additional Role: Stabilizes the ribcage and pelvis during dynamic movements.
Synergistic Role: Works with other erector spinae muscles to balance loads during lifting and bending.
