Origin
Transverse processes of vertebrae C1–C4.
Insertion
Medial border of the scapula.
Nerves
Primarily innervated by the dorsal scapular nerve (C5) and secondary anterior rami of cervical nerves C3 and C4.
Blood Supply
Transverse cervical artery and ascending cervical artery.
The levator scapulae is a long, strap-like muscle that begins in the neck and descends to attach to the scapula, lying in the posterior triangle of the neck. Its superior aspect is covered by the sternocleidomastoid, and its inferior part is covered by the trapezius. Its main function is to elevate the scapula, as its name suggests.
Additionally, it acts to inferiorly rotate the glenoid cavity, stabilize the spine, and extend and laterally flex the neck. The muscle is innervated by the dorsal scapular nerve and cervical spinal nerves (C3 and C4), making it vital for scapular movement and upper body posture.
